I was born with a condition called Primary Immunodeficiency Disease (PI) meaning the essential parts of my immune system were missing. My body did not and was not able to create the primary or most common antibodies necessary to fight infections. Do you remember "Bubble Boy"? He had SCID or Severe Combine Immune Deficiency which is the most severe of the Primary Immune Deficiency diseases. The immune system is tremendously complex, hundreds of things can go wrong during development and sometimes the backup systems cannot compensate for the defects. PI is not as severe as SCID, but I suffered most of my life with, at times severe and chronic infections. It meant, once a got sick my already compromised immune system was overly taxed and would usually get multiple illnesses at once. I've had pneumonia 12 times in my life, with many hospitalizations on intravenous antibodies, steroids, and oxygen. This went on for years with, doctor after doctor trying to find an answer. From being missed diagnosed for many other conditions, to telling me "it was all in my head". Those were the scariest years of my life but they were also filled with joy. I was able to become pregnant with my son but had a difficult pregnancy. He was born 4 weeks premature. After many weeks in the hospital, I'm happy to say he was born healthy, strong and most importantly PI free! He is now a decorated military man, a wonderful husband and a fantastic father of two beautiful children!
In 2009 I sought the help of an Immunologist. She made the connection and the blood work confirmed the diagnoses of PI. Together we tried vaccinations, to help stimulate my immune system to create these essential antibodies but they failed to produce results. The only other option that was offered to me at the time was to have intravenous antibodies therapy once a month. Each therapy session would take three hours, costs thousands of dollars and would not be covered by insurance.
I was so sick and tired of being sick and tired ... there had to be other options...
I researched natural and holistic therapies involving nutrition, meditation, life coaching and raising my spiritual consciousness! Don't get me wrong Allopathic Medicine saved my life more than once and I'm grateful for that. What I wanted to change was my day to day lifestyle through a Holistic approach. Our Healthcare system has recognized Alternative Healthcare and is rapidly moving towards Integrative Medicine, combining the best of both, in areas of prevention and treatment. This is a very exciting time to be alive!
I started with detox plan; eating a nutrient dense, alkaline, plant base diet. I also started researching essential oils because they also come from plants. I found an essential oils class being held in my area and went to see what these were all about. I was eating a plant base diet and felt great, so it made since to me that incorporating essential oils into my diet, I might feel even better and you know what; I was right! I also found the highest quality supplements, which did not up-set my stomach, and focused my attention on what brought me joy! The results have been amazing! I can honestly say that, at the age of 56, I have never felt better! I seldom get sick and have an abundance of energy. Healthy means; eyes are bright, skin is soft with a youthful glow, hair is strong and shiny and your body moves with grace at a healthy weight . These are true signs of Thriving Vitality!
This inspired me to attend the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts in Tempe, Arizona. I become a distinguished graduate of this award-winning private holistic healthcare college where I trained and became certified as a Holistic Nutritionist and Transformational Life Coach. I furthered my studies as an Essential Oils Wellness Advocate, so I could bring the message of health and vitality to others!
You don’t have to settle for just feeling okay; you can live your life filled with all the Energy, Health, Joy and Thriving VitalityTM you dreamed!
What is Holistic Nutrition?
As a Holistic Nutritionist, I view the whole person, mind, body and spirit together to see what areas of your life would benefit from positive changes. We are not separate beings, when you make positive, loving changes in one area of your life, other areas improve with grace. By bringing mindfulness to eating we nourish not only our bodies, we nourish our mind and spirit.
For example, I invite you to think about eating an apple... holding it in your hand you notice its beautiful color, it feels cool in temperature, and is firm to your touch. Now notice the apple's aroma, as you do so your mouth begins to water in anticipation of your first bite. Mine's watering right now just from the thought of it! This is your body signaling that something good is about to take place. Your saliva contains digestive enzymes that will aid your body in breaking down the apple even before it reaches your stomach.
Now lets think about the tree that produced that apple. It took one year for that apple tree to produce its fruit and yet we may eat it mindlessly while we are working, driving or watching TV. I invite you to pause and think about the growers of the orchard, the apple pickers and the truck drivers delivering the harvest around the world. This need only take but a moment. In my practice, I invite you to become more mindful of what you are feeding your body, mind and spirit. To slow down, ask yourself how will the food I eat, books I read, movies I watch, words I speak and the thoughts I allow myself to have effect my mind, body, and spirit?
Now let's take a bite of that beautiful apple and allow it to nourish us Holistically!
